Heritage skills workshop - late summer scything at Bathampton Meadows

Learn to scythe with the rangers.

Scything is the traditional way of cutting a hay meadow, going back thousands of years. It was a skill required by many farm labourers, but the arrival of machinery created a much faster way to cut meadows. There is however still a place for the scythe in our work, and you will learn its benefit to both wildlife and people in this workshop with the rangers. Appreciate the peace and quiet, and enjoy the rhythm of the scythe.

Please note:

  • Please meet at Bathampton Meadows, near Grosvenor Bridge (Bath side of Bathampton Meadows).
  • Please wear suitable outdoor clothing. Long trousers are advised because of the long grass. Please wear sturdy shoes, no open toes. We will be monitoring the weather forecast beforehand.
  • Bring your own lunch.
  • The workshop will take place in an uneven field.
  • This workshop is aimed at adults.
