Outdoor skills sessions at Fell Foot
A beginners guide to hiking with top tips for route planning, safety and what to bring with you.

Are you thinking about hiking in the Lake District but you’re not sure where to start? This session will provide you with an introduction to map reading, orienteering, and what essentials to pack in your rucksack to help you plan your next walk. In this practical workshop we'll pass on some vital gems of information. We’ll look at:
• Basic navigation and map reading, including having a go at orienteering.
• Equipment and what to pack
• Safety in the outdoors - from planning, through to what to do in an emergency
• Access rights and countryside code.
It will be in the grounds of Fell Foot, please bring suitable outdoor footwear and waterproofs.
Cost £5 per person. Booking essential.
The session will be no more than 2.5 hours and will include indoor presentations and teaching, as well as lots of time outside to practice those new skills.
Please note:
- Please head to the welcome point which will be adjacent to the Boathouse Cafe.
- Please bring appropriate clothing for spending time outside in all weathers, including decent footwear as we will be out and about during the sessions.
- The sessions are suitable for all, in order for us to tailor the outdoor part of the day please let us know when you book if you have any accessibility needs and we will be in touch to discuss how best to make the experience as good as it can be for you.
- The event is aimed at those 16 years and over.
- You are encouraged to bring any outdoor equipment you have and what you may usually pack in a rucksack to go walking, as well as poles or other equipment so we can talk over equipment as part of the sessions.
