Wassail in the orchards at Brockhampton

On Friday 7 February, join us for an evening of merriment as we awaken the orchard during this traditional wassail ceremony.

Take part in this age-old tradition of waking up the fruit trees and warding off bad spirits in a guided procession through the orchards. We will be joined by Jenny Pipes Morris who will be leading you through the orchards, with music and dancing, burning of the “Apostle Bushes” and a Wassail Bowl. The procession will finish at the courtyard, where you can get some warming refreshments from the Granary Kiosk, and see additional performances from Jenny Pipes Morris. The manor house will be open too, allowing you to experience a cosy winter's evening in this beautiful setting at a time when it is usually closed.

This event will take place in the orchards during the evening, so we ask that all visitors bring a good quality torch with them, as well as outdoor clothing/footwear, and (optionally) some pots and pans to make noise with! The procession will follow a 1-mile route along hard-standing paths, suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs.

There is no admission fee for this event, however due to limited car park capacity, you will need to book a car park space in advance (£3 per car). This parking charge applies to National Trust members and non-members. Please consider how many people will be travelling in your vehicle before booking, and try to car share wherever possible.

We also ask that National Trust members bring their membership cards to be scanned at the welcome centre.

Please note:

  • Show your booking confirmation on arrival at the kiosk and follow directions from stewards to the courtyard.
  • Please bring a torch (mobile phone torches are fine, but handheld torches are even better!). Dress for the weather and bring suitable shoes for walking.
