Grasslands butterfly workshops
Be part of creating a kaleidoscope of butterflies for our brand new summer art installation. Inspired by THE HERDS project, and our nature conservation work. Delivered in partnership with Barnsley Museums and kindly supported by Art Fund.
Join this creative workshop with local artist Jo Veal to be part of making a kaleidoscope of butterflies, which will be enjoyed by our visitors throughout the summer. The workshop is recommended for everyone aged 7+, so if you enjoy being creative this workshop is for you.
You will learn how to craft a beautiful butterfly using willow and a range of decorative techniques. Please note, the workshops are designed for our community to work together and create an art installation in different stages so you will not be able to take your butterfly home but you will be able to visit your work displayed in the gardens this summer and be part of a large scale art display!
Tickets are £3. You will need a ticket for every adult and child entering the workshop space so we have enough room. There is an option of a free parent/carer ticket if you are not participating independently but supporting children in your family group. Normal site admission will apply to everyone. All ticket holders will be encouraged to participate and children must be supervised by at least one adult per group.
The techniques used in this workshop make it less suitable for younger children but we will have a simple activity and reading corner so they are welcome to join you in the room.
Inspired by The HERDS project, a groundbreaking public art and climate initiative, and our grassland habitat restoration work, the butterflies will celebrate nature as well as sparking conversations about how to care for it.
Please note:
- Standard admission charges apply to non-members on arrival.
- Meet at the Blackbourn Room in the Conservatory. The distance from the Visitor Reception and car park to the Conservatory is around 800m up a hill, so please allow time for this.
- Dress for messy creative activities.
- A buggy is available at the Visitor Reception building to support those who need extra help. Accessible toilets are available. Please visit the access page of our website for further information.
- Suitable for ages 7+. Tickets are needed for everyone aged 7+ entering the room.
- We are sorry but this workshop is not suitable for those visiting with dogs.
