High Close Arboretum - Hidden Natures and Histories
Join us at High Close Arboretum for a unique guided walk as part of our 'Hidden Nature & Histories' series here in the Lakes. Explore and learn more about one of our hidden gems, a truly special place a little bit off the beaten track.
Join us for a guided walk exploring the unique High Close Arboretum. Discover 11 acres of rare trees and shrubs from around the world. Originally planted in 1866 by Edward Wheatley-Balme, a Yorkshire merchant and philanthropist, High Close was designed in the fashion of the day using many of the recently discovered ‘exotic’ conifers and evergreen shrubs coming into Britain from America. There are many fine tree specimens including Douglas firs, Sitka spruce and giant redwoods.
Please note:
- Meet at our ranger station which is located opposite the Langdale YHA on Red Bank.
- Please bring suitable outdoor footwear and clothing suitable for the forecasted weather conditions.
- Most of the paths are well graded but there are some uneven sections and some slopes. Please email our team on ullswater@nationaltrust.org.uk if you have any access queries.
- Children must be accompanied by an adult.
