Exhibition Tour of 'Home in the Shadows: Photography by Nick Hedges'
Join us for a tour of our current exhibition, ‘Home in the Shadows,’ a powerful new exhibition showcasing the work of documentary photographer Nick Hedges.
Born on the outskirts of Birmingham and trained at Birmingham College of Art, Nick Hedges spent the late 1960s and early 1970s capturing images of life in the city’s substandard housing. Commissioned by housing charity Shelter, Hedges’ work exposed the harsh realities of urban poverty—and helped to ignite a national conversation about housing rights.
The tour will take you deeper into the stories behind the photographs, exploring the social history of Birmingham, the stories and experiences of living in Back to Backs in the 1960s, and the legacy of ‘slum clearance’.
We will discuss the legacy of Nick’s work and the contemporary relevance of his photographs.
This talk will be delivered by Isobel, Senior Programming and Partnerships Officer at the Birmingham Back to Backs who worked with Nick Hedges and the Library of Birmingham on this exhibition.
Please note:
- Meet at Court 15 Bookshop.
- Please wear comfortable clothing.
- Please note that our exhibition is on the first floor, only accessible by stairs.
- Not suitable for Children.
