Guided bat walks at Stackpole Estate

Join us on 29 July and 26 August for guided bat walks at dusk. This is a gentle walk that visits the site of two bat roosts, including the greater horseshoe nursery roost. Bat detectors are provided to share and are used to hear the bats.

The walk starts at Stackpole Centre with an introduction to the bats we might encounter. Then we'll head along a small road towards a pipistrelle roost, arriving at around twilight. This is a level road and easy to follow. As it begins to get dark, we’ll take the route into Lodge Park Wood, where several different bats may be picked up on the detectors. Then we’ll continue to the old stables of the mansion and the greater horseshoe bat roost.

The return route varies depending on how everyone is feeling and either returns along the same route to Stackpole Centre, or heads down to the lakeside path, stopping at the Eight Arch Bridge where there is often bat activity. This path changes level twice, can be uneven in parts, and muddy when wet.

This is a ticketed event. Tickets cost £7 per adult, £4 per child and there is a family group 20% discount. Booking is essential.

Please note:

  • Meet at the reception at the Stackpole centre adjacent to the car park.
  • Dress for the weather with sturdy shoes and and waterproofs, just in case. Please also bring a head torch or a hand-held torch.
  • This walk includes uneven ground and muddy footpaths. The walking distance will be approximately three miles. If you think this event might not be for you, please call us on 01646 623110 for more information. Accessible toilets are available at the Stackpole Centre.
The walking rate is gentle so high levels of fitness are not required.
  • Suitable for children if accompanied by an adult.
  • Toilets located at Stackpole Centre (start of route) and at Stackpole Court (30 minutes into the walk).
  • This event is not suitable for dogs and there are no breaks on route.
  • As with all wildlife, there are no guarantees that bats will be seen. Rain does reduce the likelihood of bats being out, although there’s still a chance of seeing greater horseshoe bats. Bats may also change to other roost sites during the season.
