Introduction to Weaving on a Rigid Heddle Loom
29 March: explore the art of weaving on a rigid heddle loom.
Rigid heddle looms are a good choice for new weavers as setting up is straight forward and new ones are relatively inexpensive. You will be able to explore the variety of patterns that can be woven in plain weave (over one thread and under the next) using two colours.
You will spend half the day weaving on a loom set up for balanced weave (the type used for fabrics). The other half the day will be spent weaving on a loom threaded at about 4 threads an inch. These threads, which are the warp, will be completely covered by the weft. Your weaving samples can be made up into small bags or used as mats.
A four shaft loom will be used to explain the name “Rigid Heddle” and show a few of the patterns that can be woven on it.
This course is suitable for beginners, no prior experience with weaving is needed.
The tutor for this course is Angela Pawlyn. Angela is a member of both the Oxford and Kennet Valley Guilds of Weavers Spinners and Dyers. She has nearly fifty years of weaving experience and teaches at several venues across Oxfordshire. We keep class sizes small to allow you plenty of time with the course tutor.
This course takes place on 29 March, 10am-4pm. There will be a short break for lunch and tea/coffee is provided.
Please note:
- Please meet at the Timber Store in the Carpenters' Yard. The Heritage and Rural Skills Centre is located in Coleshill village. Follow signs from the main road.
- All tools and materials included. Wear practical clothes suitable for crafting. Please bring your own refreshments (or the means to purchase these from the on-site café).
- Accessible parking spaces marked in the car park. Toilets on site, including accessible toilet. Level access into the teaching space. Some uneven surfaces such as cobbles due to the historic nature of the building. Seating provided, but the nature of the course may necessitate some standing. Please contact us if you would like to have an informal chat about access before you book.
