Shire Horse Experience Days
A unique experience to spend the day working with our magnificent Wimpole Shire horses.
Spend the day with our resident Shire horses as part of this experience day.
The course includes:
- Learning about harness and having a go at putting it on the Shires.
- Long-reining a Shire using verbal instructions and via the reins around obstacles in the paddock, before taking the reins to drive a one-horse carriage through the estate.
- Helping to turn the horses out in the field at the end of the day.
No previous experience with horses necessary, but participants need to be over 16 years old, and be fit enough to walk at pace on uneven ground.
Spaces are limited and booking is essential.
Please note:
- Please park in our farm staff car park, found by driving past the main visitor entrance and taking a small track to the left beyond the farm. A member of the team will meet you in the picnic area.
- Please wear sturdy shoes suitable for walking over rough ground and clothing for suitable for the weather and outdoor work. No loose clothing, dangling jewellery and long hair should be tied back.
- The experience day includes considerable walking and standing on uneven ground, and participants need to be fit enough to walk at pace whilst working with the horses.
- Participants must be over 16.
- Participants should bring their own lunch (the Farm Cafe will be closed on weekdays) but tea and coffee will be provided. Experience Days may be postponed in the case of adverse weather or for animal welfare reasons, but adequate notice will be given.
