Heritage Open Days: Hidden Spaces - the Lay Brothers' Dormitory

Visit a hidden part of the ruins of Fountains Abbey – learn more about the life of the Lay Brothers who lived and worked on the estate.

Ticket holders receive free access to Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, including our cafes and shop selling handmade goods and local produce.

Meet your tour guide in the Abbey Nave. Please arrive at least 10 minutes before your time slot. There'll be plenty of time for a photo opportunity!

Want to learn more? Join our free drop-in tours of the Garden and Abbey (11am and 1pm) or the Abbey (12pm and 2pm). These tours start from Porter’s Lodge, where you can also learn more about the history of the abbey in our permanent, interactive exhibition.

Free admission on this day is only valid with a Heritage Open Day tour ticket for this event. Please give the name you booked your ticket(s) under when you arrive.

Please note:

  • Meet your tour guide in the Abbey Nave; a 10-15 minute walk from the visitor centre, with a steep incline; a 5 minute walk from the level access West Gate entrance; a 30 minute walk from Studley.
  • We are an outdoor site so please dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy shoes as the ground is uneven in places.
  • Due to steep historic steps leading up to the Lay Brothers Dormitory, there is no level access.
    We have a portable hearing loop available to hire, free of charge, for guided tours. Pre-booking is essential, please call 01765 608888. Collect it from your guide on the day. You can use this with a hearing aid set to 'T' or with headphones.
  • No booking required for children under 5.
  • This event has been curated as part of Heritage Open Days 2023, the country's largest community heritage festival.
