Estate Walk: Holt Heath
Discover the fascinating history and nature of Holt Heath.
Distance: 5 miles. Time: approx. 3 hours
Holt Heath is an important lowland heath and is home to local plants including common heather, bell heather, cross-leaved heather, bog asphodel, sundews and marsh gentian. Birds include large populations of Dartford warbler, stonechat, curlew and nightjar. All six of Britain’s reptile species are found here.
This summer, Holt Heath faced a significant challenge when a wildfire impacted 72 hectares of heathland. While the fire caused considerable damage, it also revealed the remarkable resilience of this landscape. Thanks to rapid conservation efforts, nearly 30 reptiles were rescued, and recovery work is now underway to help the heathland bounce back.
