Racism, Representation and Books with Blacklore
We welcome Lyza who created Blacklore as a safe and fun space to engage with BIPOC+ and Queer literature, aiming to create a booming book community in Birmingham.
Representation in the book space is a never-ending conversation with little to no resolve. The systematic exclusion of ethnic minorities from the book space reflects the deeper issues that exist in our society.
Join us in Black History Month 2024 to discuss how we can strengthen community ties through books and actively support authors of colour. Hear how Lyza’s experiences as a Black Queer literature lover led her to create a community on TikTok and hold space for fellow readers. This event is held as part of the Brum Buzzcut, a collaboration between Back To Books and the National Trust.
We will provide seating and light refreshments, we operate this festival with a safer spaces framework and are intentional in creating care and belonging.
Please note:
- Normal admission charges apply to non-members on arrival.
- Meet at Court 15 Bookshop at the Birmingham Back to Backs.
- Please wear comfortable clothing.
- Find us in the Court15 bookshop for this conversation, off the pavement at 61 Hurst Street. There is step-free access into the shop, and a disabled toilet within the Back to Backs space.
- Not suitable for children.
