Bracken Bashing in Sheffield Wood with our Rangers

Help the rangers in their conservation work in this fun, active day in the woods.

Why bracken bashing? Bracken is a fast-growing fern that can quickly dominate an area and prevent other plants from getting enough sunlight and nutrients. By controlling the bracken, we are allowing wildflowers, grasses, and native tree saplings to thrive, which in turn creates a more diverse habitat for insects, birds and small mammals.

We will provide the necessary tools but please bring gloves, plenty to drink and a packed lunch – there is food available to purchase from The Shant café in the gardens (cash only) or from our main café, which is a 15-20 minute walk away.

Suitable for ages 10+. This event includes working with tools.

Please note:

  • Normal admission charges apply to non-members on arrival.
  • Meet just through Visitor Reception.
  • Please bring gardening gloves if you have them and wear clothes and footwear suitable for an active day outside. We recommend long sleeves and trousers.
  • This event includes walking across the garden to Sheffield Wood - which is rough terrain and can be muddy. Bracken bashing is a physically demanding job. Please let us know if you have access requirements.
  • Aimed at adults and children aged 10+.
  • The nearest toilets are at Visitor Reception.
