Art on the Island: Salt clay workshop

Join us for a family-friendly clay-making workshop on Northey Island.

Humans have been harvesting salt in Maldon for thousands of years. Northey Island has evidence of these early salt works, where salt was dried over open fire bowls, creating red clay ‘hills', remnants of which can still be found in the area today.

Join us for a family workshop, just in time for Father’s Day, where you'll meet a local ceramicist, learn more about the island's fascinating history and then have the opportunity to create your own Northey-inspired clay sculpture.

No experience is necessary. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Please note:

  • Meet in Promenade Park (CM9 5UR) at the start of the War Memorial by the Boating Lake car park.
    W3W: airbrush.engraving.earful
Pay and display parking available (not National Trust).
  • Northey Island is a remote and exposed location so please bring layers, waterproof clothing and wear sensible footwear suitable for uneven terrain.
  • This event includes a 20-minute walk on uneven terrain which is mainly flat. There are no accessible bathroom facilities. Please email us at northeyisland@nationaltrust.org.uk if you would like more information.
  • Children must be accompanied by an adult.
