Free Mam Tor Hillfort Guided Walk & Litter Pick
A free guided walk and litter pick celebrating 80 years of the National Trust caring for Mam Tor. The circular route explores the history and the ongoing restoration project at Mam Tor Hillfort, Odin Mine and Winnats Pass.
This moderate guided walk explores some of the Peak Districts’ most spectacular archaeological and geological sites including Mam Tor Hillfort, Odin Mine and Winnats Pass. Beginning at Mam Tor Car Park, the walk ascends the steps onto Mam Tor's Iron Age Hillfort. From the summit, the route descends into the Hope Valley, stopping at Odin Mine, before a steep ascent up the impressive limestone gorge at Winnats Pass and back to the car park.
Our knowledgeable Walk Leaders will discuss the areas deep history, geological importance and the essential restoration work currently underway to protect it from increased pressure from tourism and climate change.
The walk is approximately 6km and includes a steep ascent, steps, and follows an uneven footpath. Dogs on leads are welcome but there may be some stiles.
Please note:
- Please meet by the steps at the top of Mam Tor Car Park.
- Mam Tor Car Park is operated by the National Trust. There is a membership card scanner for members. Non-members must pay via PayByPhone.
- Please wear suitable outdoor clothing, sturdy footwear and bring plenty of water. While we return before midday, consider bringing a packed lunch.
- This is a moderately challenging 6km and includes a steep ascent, steps, and follows an uneven footpath.
- Dogs on leads are welcome but there may be some stiles.
- Older accompanied children are welcome.
- Please arrive by 09:20 to leave promptly at 09:30.
- This event may be cancelled in the unlikely event of extreme weather.
