Mediterranean Gardening: Insights from Delos

The Sissinghurst Series presents Sissinghurst gardener Richard Gravett on how to create your own Mediterranean garden inspired by Delos.

Join Sissinghurst gardener Richard Gravett to create your own Mediterranean garden inspired by Delos.

Participants in this talk will gain an understanding of how Sissinghurst’s Delos Garden was designed to evoke the Greek Cyclades Isles and how they can bring a Mediterranean landscape into their own garden.

Using a selection of plants from the Delos Garden, Richard will guide you through the process of arranging plants to create a naturalistic garden that resembles phrygana, the low-growing and ephemeral plant communities found throughout the Mediterranean region. You will learn how adaptable these plants are to our climate and how they are propagated and produced for the garden.

The talk will also cover how to maintain these plants so they retain their wild habit, enhance garden beauty, and provide niche habitats for wildlife.

Finally, Richard will share the upcoming second phase of the Delos Garden, offering an exclusive look at the design drawings. He will discuss plans to recreate a different aspect of the Cyclades, featuring rocky, oak-shaded areas typical of the islands.

A fantastic opportunity to explore how these ideas can bring a Mediterranean feel to a shadier corner of your garden.

This event is part of The Sissinghurst Series for 2024, a series of horticultural experts speaking on topical issues in the gardening world today.
