‘The Gibside men who marched away’ talk with Helen MacFarlane

Join us this Armistice Day for a talk about the working men of Gibside who fought in the First World War.

This Armistice Day, uncover the remarkable stories of the working men of Gibside who left behind the estate’s fields, mines, and workshops to serve in the First World War. From the quiet grounds of a Georgian estate to the battlefields of Europe, their journeys reveal courage, sacrifice, and unexpected twists of fate.

Volunteer researcher Helen MacFarlane shares insights from her ongoing research, shedding light on eight individuals whose lives were forever changed by war. Join us in Gibside Stables to honour their legacy and explore the estate’s powerful wartime connections.

Please be aware that the Stables is a 30 minute walk from Visitor Reception. Please arrive with enough time to arrive at the Stables before 11.30am.

Please note:

  • Standard admission charges apply to non-members on arrival.
  • The talk will take place in the Bowes room, upstairs in Gibside Stables. There will be signs to guide your way. Please be aware that the Stables are a 30 minute walk from Visitor Reception.
  • The Stables are old buildings and can be cold, even in mild weather. Please wear appropriate clothing and shoes for the weather conditions.
  • The Bowes room is accessible by lift, operated by a staff member. Please be aware that the path up to the Stables includes a steep ascent and uneven ground. To book an electric mobility vehicle call 07712 535938. The Gibside shuttle bus may be available on the day. Assistance dogs allowed. Email gibside@nationaltrust.org.uk before the event if you require any assistance.
