Wednesday at 1: The Women and the Birds - The Founding of the RSPB

Join us at the Castlefield Viaduct in honour of the RSPB’s Great Big Garden Bird Watch to discover the origins of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, with speaker Anne Beswick.

The Society for the Protection of Birds (later Royal) was founded in 1889 in Manchester. Its roots were not in gentle country pursuits but in a movement against cruelty and thoughtlessness in Victorian society. This struggle ran alongside Manchester's famous campaign for Women's Suffrage but few remember the women who fought for the birds.

Please note:

  • The Viaduct event space is fully accessible with ramps.
