Guided walk: Godalming Navigation versus the railway

Hear how the Godalming Navigation fared after the coming of the railway.

The walk takes in the navigation at St Catherine's and on towards Stonebridge. And while enroute you'll see the railway embankment that never saw a train.

At Shalford railway station and learn about the wartime collision which set alight wagons full of aviation fuel. After a rest at the Snooty Fox cafe, if you would like refreshments, on to a footpath on the trackbed of the former Guildford to Horsham railway line, and back to the starting point. The walk is being led by local historian David Rose and retired railwayman and historian Geoff Burch. You will hear lots of stories about the railway lines here, plus David and Geoff will show vintage photos of the railway and waterway in these parts.

This walk is roughly 5 miles.

Please note:

  • Meet at Artington Park and Ride, GU3 1LP.  We'll be at the far end on the left hand side as you come in.
  • Walking boots will make your walk easier
  • Predominantly flat surfaces, towpath and footpaths, mostly good, can be muddy when wet.
  • The walk is free but we ask you book so we have an idea of how many are coming.
