Guided Walk - South Dorset Ridgeway
Join our expert archaeologist along a section of the South Dorset Ridgeway. This guided walk provides the opportunity to learn about one of the UK’s most significant ancient, ceremonial landscapes.
Walking with our expert guide we will explore a section of the South Dorset Ridgeway, starting at Hardy Monument, which has been important to local people for millennia. From long and bank barrows constructed around 6,000 years ago to stone circles and 4,000 year old Bronze Age round barrows, to Iron Age hillforts, the area rivals the more well known sites of Stonehenge and Avebury.
The Ridgeway also offers fantastic views of the Jurassic Coast and the inland scenery of river valleys, chalk downland, villages and farmland.
Please note:
- Standard admission charges apply to non-members on arrival.
- Meet outside the Hardy Monument - Hardy Monument, Black Down, Portesham, Dorset, DT2 9HY
- The landscape is very exposed so wear the correct clothing for the weather and good, sturdy shoes. Long trousers are recommended due to a risk of tics and overgrown hedges. Bring water and snacks.
- The ground is very uneven which is likely to be muddy in places if there has been rain. Some pathways could be overgrown so we recommend long trousers.
- The walk is likely to be around 2 hours with some hills to climb and uneven footpaths.
