Introduction to Chippendale at Nostell Tour
Join us at Nostell as we bring Chippendale’s story to life, celebrating his craft, his legacy, and the history behind his iconic designs.
Just a short distance from Nostell, in the town of Otley, Thomas Chippendale was born - and went on to become one of Britain’s most celebrated furniture makers. Join our knowledgeable volunteers on a fascinating tour that explores the remarkable legacy he left at Nostell.
From exquisite furniture to intricate wallpaper designs, Chippendale’s craftsmanship can be found throughout the house. But his relationship with Nostell’s owners, Rowland and Sabine Winn, was far from smooth. Uncover a compelling tale of artistic ambition, delayed deliveries, unpaid bills, and occasional disagreements — set against a backdrop of elegant and timeless design. Discover why Chippendale’s work was, and still is, considered both “elegant and useful,” and why he remains one of the most sought-after designers of his time.
This tour lasts 45 minutes and there will be the opportunity for questions.
Please note:
- Standard admissions charges apply to non-members on arrival.
- Please meet at the front door of the house.
- A lift is available to access the first floor of the house. Please note that it is quite narrow, and some mobility scooters may not fit. Manual wheelchairs are available to reserve in advance. For full details, please refer to our Access Statement.
- Not suitable for children.
