Join professional storyteller Jessie McMeekin for a performed reading by the fire in Wordsworth's former study at Allan Bank.

Indulge in the old-fashioned wintery thrill of gathering round the fire to hear ghost stories from Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Dickens and other writers from the 19th century. A special after-hours event in Wordsworth’s study at Allan Bank.

With the lights turned down low, you’ll hear a ‘performed reading’ of these literary stories, some that are well-known and some that may be new to you. Come prepared to have your blood run cold!

Ticket price includes a glass of mulled wine or non-alcoholic equivalent.

Please note:

  • Check in at Visitor Welcome desk inside the house.
  • Wrap up warm for the walk up from the village carparks to the house. A torch is useful as no lighting on driveway up to the house.
  • The storytelling will take place in the ground floor study which is wheelchair accessible. 
    Accessible toilet on ground floor. Pedestrian access and limited Blue Badge vehicle access only onsite.
  • Please use public pay and display car parks in Grasmere village and allow plenty of time before the event to find parking and walk up the hill to Allan Bank.
  • Suitable for adults.
  • This is a 90 minute long event with a 20 minute interval. The second-hand bookshop & downstairs exhibition 'Wordsworth the Influencer' will be open during the interval. 
  • Please arrive 15 minutes before the event. The house is a 10-15 minute walk up from the village carparks, though visitors can be dropped at the gate before parking in the village.
