Jurassic Jaunt, a Family Friendly Fossil Hunt in Robin Hoods Bay

Join palaeontologist Dr Liam Herringshaw for an in depth look at the fossils that can be found here at Robin Hoods Bay and perhaps even find some for yourself.

Join palaeontologist Dr Liam Herringshaw for this two and a half hour, family-friendly fossil-finding tour of Robin Hood’s Bay. We’ll meet at the Old Coastguard Station for an intro chat, and a chance to look at some of the fossils we might find, before heading down onto the beach. Looking closely at the bedrock, and picking carefully through the shingle, we’ll discover that Robin Hood’s Bay is a treasure trove for fossil-finders. Not only are there Jurassic creatures like ammonites, belemnites and devil’s toenails, but surprising specimens sometimes pop out of the Ice Age clays too!

Please note:

  • Meet upstairs in the Exhibition Room at the Old Coastguard Station, Robin Hoods Bay.
  • As most of this event is outdoors on the beach you will need to dress for the weather conditions on the day. Sturdy closed toe footwear is essential. Fossil Hammers are not required or permitted.
  • The Beach is accessed via a cobbled slipway. The beach is rough terrain being a mixture or rocks and sand. Please see the accessibility statement on the National Trust Yorkshire Coast Webpage.
  • Suitable for ages 8+. All under 18's must be accompanied by and adult.
  • As Robin Hoods Bay is a SSSI site the use of fossil hammers to break up the bedrock or cliffs is forbidden. Staff on the day will advise how to look for fossils in a safe and responsible way.
  • As this session is 2.5 hours long and is more in-depth this will suit older children 8+ and adults. All people attending the event must purchase a ticket.
