Helios at night at Coventry Charterhouse

We're displaying Helios at night at Coventry Charterhouse! Helios is a new artwork of the sun by Luke Jerram. This seven-metre sculpture combines solar imagery, light and sound to highlight the sun's intricate details.

This August you will be able to experience the awe-inspiring new artwork from Luke Jerram: Helios

Named after the sun god in ancient Greek mythology, this seven-metre spherical sculpture of the sun combines light, solar imagery and sounds recorded by NASA to bring the sun's intricate details to a new light.

Helios is embarking on a tour of National Trust properties and other locations. It will be shining at night, in the garden of the Charterhouse this summer: 1-2 and 9 August.

Coventry Charterhouse will make for an unforgettable backdrop for the large, glowing sun underneath the natural skies and surrounded by the bright colours of autumn in the landscape. To the monks who founded this special place, the sun was a vital part of the cycle of their lives.

Luke Jerram's innovative installation is illuminated from within and has a detailed surface made up from solar imagery. One centimetre of this impressive sculpture represents 200km of the sun's surface. Together with the soundscape created from NASA recordings, this immersive experience allows you to explore the intricacies, power and scale of the sun's surface in a way you never have before.

Helios has been co-commissioned by National Trust, Cork Midsummer Festival, Liverpool Cathedral, Old Royal Naval College and University College London.

Please note:

  • Start your visit at Visitor Reception, who will point you in the direction of the art installation.
  • Please dress appropriately for the weather. We have limited seating available, so please feel free to bring your own chair and blanket.
  • Charterhouse has accessible footpaths to the Visitor Reception and into the garden.
  • Suitable for children.
  • Helios will be temporarily paused if the wind picks up, to ensure the safety of the artwork and visitors. The artwork is made from a delicate material and even mild wind speeds might mean that we have to take it down. We won't take the decision lightly as we hate to disappoint our visitors but if we do, we'll try and give as much notice as we're able to.
  • If we do cancel and you've booked a ticket to one of our evening events you'll be notified via email from our events team.
  • The house will be closed during evening events, but the gardens will remain open for viewing Helios.
