Catching Copper - Free guided walks for Heritage Open Days

Explore the Landscape Behind the Work Join artist Sovay Berriman for a guided walk through the industrial, rural, and social landscapes that inspired her exhibition at Michell’s Engine House: Catching Copper.

Starting at the Engine House, this intermediate-level walk will take you through key sites of local heritage and personal connection. Along the way, Sovay who's family has lived and worked in the area for over 100 years — will share stories, memories, and reflections not found in
guidebooks.

“Pool is full of history. Walking through the Heartlands site, which is unrecognisable from the industrial wasteland that was here after Crofty closed - it’s so green now - you can see Carn Brea and also Tamar building at Cornwall College, which is a purpose built art building designed by the county architect of the time to allow maximum light into the studios.”

This is more than a walk—it's an invitation to experience place through art, memory, and imagination. Connect with the land, the stories beneath your feet, and the creative roots of Catching Copper.

The walk will start at 10:15am at Michell's Engine House.

It is a 9.5km or 5.9 mile route so is estimated to take about 2.5 hours with a rest stop. After the walk, the group will be invited to view the exhibition at Michell's engine house with soft refreshments.

Please note:

  • Park in Morrison's car park and meet at Michell's Engine House for 10:15am, 15 minutes before the start of the walk.
