Introduction to silk screen printing with Rachel Moore

Take inspiration from 600 years of history and the beauty of autumn, and join us for a day of design and screen printing at Knole.

Whether you’re new to printmaking or simply looking for a fresh perspective, this is a chance to explore your creativity in a peaceful, historic setting and take home a hand-printed artwork inspired by your surroundings.

Your day starts in the Hayloft, where you’ll be introduced to the ancient art of screen printing using modern methods. You’ll learn how artists use layering and stencils to respond to the world around them, capturing shapes, patterns, and colours from nature and place.

With this in mind, you’ll head out to explore the showrooms and the parkland, with its changing colours of autumn, gathering ideas and motifs to use as the basis for your print.
Back in the Hayloft your tutor, Rachel, will guide you through basic design principles, showing you how to develop ideas into a final composition. You’ll try stencil-cutting techniques, learning how to block and reveal areas of colour as you build your design layer by layer.

After lunch, it’s time to print. You’ll use specialist equipment and water-based inks to create a unique screen print, experimenting with overlays, colour mixing and transparency.

All materials and refreshments are included.

Please note:

  • This workshop will be held in the Hayloft, on the top floor of the Conservation Studio.
  • The Hayloft is wheelchair accessible. Please call us on 01732 462100 to discuss your access needs.
