Wassail at Coventry Charterhouse

Discover the tradition of wassailing in the Charterhouse orchard, with song and ceremony to mark the turning of the year.

Join us in the orchard at Coventry Charterhouse for a traditional wassail, an old winter custom rooted in community, music and wishing good health for the orchard in the year ahead.

Wassailing dates back to early medieval times and was traditionally held to honour orchard trees and encourage a good harvest. During the event, visitors will gather to take part in this simple ceremony, which includes singing, toasts and traditional rituals to awaken the trees from their winter rest.

The session will feature the Sherbourne Singers and Coventry Morris Dancers, who will lead wassail songs and dancing as we gather around the trees in the orchard and take part in the ceremony together. It’s a chance to experience a piece of living history and enjoy time outdoors in a shared, reflective way.

Please note:

  • Meet outside the Charterhouse (the event will take place in the Orchard to the left of the house).
  • Wrap up warm and wear clothes suitable for the outdoors.
  • There is a path at the edge of the orchard and activities can be viewed from the path.
  • Suitable for children.
