Pirates of Penzance by Illyria
Ahoy, landlubbers and lovers of laughter! Award-winning Illyria returns with this Gilbert & Sullivan favourite. Grab your picnic blankets, sharpen your wit, and prepare to set sail for an evening of high‑spirited hijinks!
Frederick was born in a leap year on 29th February and is contracted to the Pirate King until his 21st BIRTHDAY, not his 21st year. Can the inept Penzance constabulary protect him? How will he endure a life of crime until he is 84? And will his sweetheart, Mabel, wait for him that long? Packed with hilarious melodrama, sharp satire and glittering wit and as fresh as if it had been written today.
Running time: 120 minutes (approximately), including a 20-minute interval.

On the night at the venue: Adult £20:50, Child £12:50 Family £52
Please note:
- Enter via Visitor Reception and follow the directions to the gardens. The performance takes place on the south lawn at the back of the house.
- Bring a picnic, rugs or picnic chairs and dress for the weather. Rain never stopped a pirate!
This event will go ahead whatever the weather, unless it's unsafe to do so. - There is level access to the main lawn. The buggy will be available on request to bring visitors down to the main property from the car park.
- Children are welcome, supervised by parent/guardian
- Upton House and Gardens closes at 5pm and the grounds have to be cleared. The gates for the outdoor theatre will reopen from 5.30pm. Please leave time to make it from the car park to the performance venue.
- As there is no seating available on the south lawn, we recommend that you bring a picnic blanket to sit on. You're also welcome to bring your own camping chairs. No gazebos and no barbecues please.
- This is a no smoking / vaping site.
