Stitch the Wandle: Walking and Stitching Workshop with Elly Platt, Sat 23 May 1-4.30pm
Take embroidery outdoors on a relaxed riverside walk along the Wandle. Pause to create quick stitched sketches inspired by the landscape, using simple techniques and upcycled fabrics.
Join textile artist Elly Platt for a creative outdoor sewing workshop inspired by the River Wandle and the habitats it flows through in Morden Hall Park.
As we walk through the park, we will stop at a series of locations to create quick embroidered “sketches”, responding to the river, its wildlife and the surrounding landscape. Using upcycled fabrics and simple stitches, you will be encouraged to experiment freely and capture impressions of each place, rather than aiming for precision.
Elly will share prompts at each stop and demonstrate techniques to help you translate what you see and feel into fabric and thread. You can work across several small pieces or develop one evolving response as the walk unfolds.
This workshop is suitable for anyone who can thread a needle and sew a basic running stitch. It’s a chance to slow down, try something new and enjoy a creative connection with nature.
All materials are provided. Please bring something to sit on, such as a picnic blanket, cushion or folding chair.
