Volunteer Butterfly Surveyors - Training Workshop

A sign of spring to come, butterflies are once again fluttering all around us. But how do we identify them and know where they go?
Help us answer these questions by training to be one of our Volunteer Butterfly Surveyors in Bannau Brycheiniog.

Join us for an afternoon of butterfly surveyor training, where you’ll leave ready to join our team of volunteers in identifying, recording and monitoring butterflies within the fields of Bannau Brycheiniog.

Event Details:
April 15, 2026
10:00 am – 3:00 pm
National Trust Ty Mawr Farm, Libanus, Brecon, LD3 8NH

Led by our ecologist and our colleague, Jo Milborrow, from Butterfly Conservation, attendees will be trained to:
• Identify butterflies within Bannau Brycheiniog
• Navigate transect routes (routes where butterfly counting takes place)
• Collect and record data
• Work with fellow volunteers on a rota to survey butterflies weekly from April to the end of September

Our volunteer butterfly surveyors play an important role in guiding our land management efforts here at Ty Mawr Libanus, and your impact will be felt far beyond, helping us measure the biodiversity within the area. The data our volunteers collect will be shared with the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme to support efforts nationwide.

From its budding wildflower meadows to its wetlands and grasslands, Bannau Brycheiniog is home to many species of butterflies, playing a part in its rich landscape and biodiversity. Together, with your support, we can help monitor these beautiful pollinators while enjoying  the sights, sounds and beauty of the countryside.
