Bookbinding with Lucy May Schofield

Artist and expert maker Lucy May Schofield will take you on a step-by-step bookbinding journey. Lucy's inspiring teaching will show you how to make a Coptic hand sewn journal and involve you in the meditative nature of folding and sewing.

Lucy May Schofield is an international artist and maker with extensive experience in print making, book arts and teaching. Her work is held in collections at Tate Britain, Stanford University Special Collections library and Yale Centre for the British Arts and she has been the recipient of numerous arts prizes and fellowships. In this workshop she will show you how to make your own handmade Coptic stitch wooden cover journal that could be used for sketching or morning pages or writing. The final book will be able to free-stand in a circle and look almost sculptural and the processes of folding, sewing, plaiting and setting the cover will tap into the meditative nature of making practices. As Virginia Woolf used typesetting and bookbinding as meditative practice this workshop will aid rest and reset through the gentle practice of bookbinding guided by Lucy's warm, expert tuition. The workshop will take place in the beautiful Monk's House garden with views of Mount Caburn and the Downs.

Please do bring a packed lunch, and wear weather appropriate clothing as you will be outside for the duration.
Tea and coffee and light refreshments will be provided throughout the day but please do bring your own lunch.
