Cerne Abbas Rechalking Family Weekend

The National Trust is offering a special family volunteering weekend, when families with children are able to get involved in the rechalking of the Cerne Abbas Giant. Families can sign up for a two hour session on Saturday 30 May or Sunday 31st May in the morning or afternoon.

Please note:

  • Please meet at the watch point located at the Giant View car park just off the A352.
  • Wear sturdy footwear with ankle support.
We recommend wearing trousers, a hat, suncream and wearing clothes which cover your shoulders. We will provide tools & gloves. Bring a waterbottle and mug.
  • You will be working on a 1 in 3 slope where it could be easy to trip or fall.
It is hard work due to the nature of the digging and the gradient of the slope.
  • Children are welcome, please book a ticket for each member of your party
  • You’ll receive an introduction to the site you’ll be helping to care for, the tasks planned for the day, how to carry them out safely, and any site hazards.
  • Refreshments will be provided, including tea, coffee, cold drinks, and water. Please bring your own water bottle and mug for hot drinks - we want to ensure as little waste as possible.
  • Rechalking can only take place in dry weather due to the steep, potentially slippery slope. If it rains, work will stop and the day may be shortened. Very hot conditions may also require a shorter day. If poor weather is forecast, we’ll let you know as soon as possible whether the session will go ahead.
