Scything Course
26th June. This course is aimed at people who are new to scythe mowing who either want to learn about mowing or intend to purchase an Austrian scythe.
On this course you will learn about the scythe, its uses and how to safely use one yourself. Attendees will learn the differences between scythes, names of parts of the scythe, how to construct an Austrian scythe, technique for using a scythe and an understanding of best practice. You will then have a chance to learn how to mow grass with a scythe and the practice the technique for safe use, sharpening, honing, getting an even cut, creating windrows (neat piles of cut grass) and routine maintenance of the blade. Attendees will learn the differences between scythes, names of parts of the scythe, how to construct an Austrian scythe, technique for using a scythe and an understanding of best practice.
Your tutor for this course is Piers Horry, Pier has been mowing with a scythe for 25 years starting scything for his local Wildlife Trust at 17. This started a passion for wild flower meadows leading him to study a degree in Ecology, which in turn led to career in nature conservation. He has led workshops for mowing with a scythe for National trust staff and volunteers and even taught the probation service how to use a scythe.
This course takes place on the 26 June, 10am-4pm. There will be a short break for lunch and tea/coffee is provided.

Please note:
- Meet at the Reading Room at Great Coxwell. We recommend parking outside the Great Barn, a five minute walk away from the Reading Room. Further information will be provided in the joining instructions.
- Wear suitable clothes for working outside, wear sturdy shoes. We will be working in areas with long grass, trousers are recommended. There is no cafe in Great Coxwell, so please bring a packed lunch.
