Discovering Untamed Avebury: landscape, people and nature

Explore the ancient landscape of Avebury alongside archaeologist Dr Nick Snashall.

Step into the ancient Avebury landscape with our archaeologist Dr Nick Snashall.

In this walk of about four miles you’ll explore some of Avebury’s best known, and less known, sites.

Along the way Nick will reveal the strange and unfamiliar world that Avebury’s prehistoric inhabitants would have known. Where wild creatures roamed among chalkland streams and giant stones littered the downland.

This walk includes areas of rough ground and some steep slopes, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

Avebury is an open landscape and can be exposed at times, so please ensure you come prepared for both the sun and the rain.

The walk will start and finish at the Barn, and the route includes the Winterbourne (views of Silbury), Waden Hill, Overton Hill Barrow Cemetery, Falkner's Circle, the West Kennet Avenue and the Henge.
