Curators talk: The Secret Lives of Paintings

Join curator Claire Reed inside the Picture Gallery of Stourhead’s Palladian mansion. Claire will share details about discoveries made about the painting ‘Stourhead in its Infancy’ and how it changed everything we thought we knew.

You’re invited to join one of the National Trust’s regional curators, Claire Reed for a 45-minute talk exploring the discoveries made and secrets under the surface of the painting: ‘Stourhead in its Infancy’. The painting has long been thought to be the first depiction of the world-famous garden. 

The evening starts with a welcoming glass of Prosecco or non-alcoholic sparkling alternative, before heading into the impressive Picture Gallery for the talk. After the 45-minute talk there will be time for questions followed by a private view of Stourhead’s current exhibition, The Secret Lives of Paintings, accompanied by its curator.

Please note:

  • Please meet at the house which is a 10-15 minute walk from visitor reception. A shuttle bus is available for those attending the event.  House doors open from 5pm for a 6pm start.
  • Please wear weather appropriate clothing as there is a short walk to and from the house.
  • There is a set of shallow steps leading up to the house. Once inside the showrooms are all on one level. 
  • A Baronmead Stairmate Major stairclimber is available, enabling wheelchair users to access the house. To ensure there are trained staff are available for the climber, it needs to be prebooked: Please call 01747 842025 or email stourheadtramper@nationaltrust.org.uk to book.
  • Children over 16 are welcome, supervised by parent/guardian.
