Jetty: A Celebration by the Sea
Bring a picnic and enjoy an afternoon of family fun at Northey Island.
Join us on Saturday 25 July for a family fun day on Northey Island, as we celebrate the launch of Jetty, a new art installation that looks out over the precious saltmarsh.
Take a tour of the island with one of our rangers, find out what it’s really like to be an archaeologist as you search for finds in the sand trays and help us look for wildlife – as a haven for wildlife on the Blackwater Estuary, there’s plenty to see!
Challenge friends and family to a lawn game, paint with plants and hear a talk by Sara Hayes to discover how rising sea levels inspired her to create a new piece of art.
The event is free but booking is required.
The island will open to guests from 14:00, with several activities available. A welcome talk and the Jetty launch will take place at the art installation at 14:30. Walking tours of the island (to be booked on arrival) will take place at 14.50, 15.10, 15.30, 16.00 and 16.20. We ask that all guests arrive by 15:00.
Parking will be available in the farmyard of South House Farm (CM9 6PP or what3words ///archive.diets.glue) and will involve a scenic 1.9km walk over the historic causeway before discovering Northey’s hidden track to the event site in the gardens of Northey House.

Please note:
- Once you've walked across the causeway and arrived at the event, please head to the info point to sign in.
- Please dress suitably for the weather. Drinking water is available on the island but please bring other refreshments with you.
- Access to the island is up and over the (tarmacked) sea wall and via a crushed rock causeway. Routes around the island are relatively flat and include a mix of surfaces, such as tarmac and compacted paths. An accessible toilet will be available on hard standing.
For specific access needs, please email northeyisland@nationaltrust.org.uk to discuss how we can support your visit. - This is a family-friendly event but children must be accompanied by an adult.
- Northey Island is an exposed location on the Blackwater Estuary, so please dress suitably for the weather. This includes sun cream and hats if it is warm and sunny, and waterproofs and layers if there is a chance of rain.
As part of the walking tour, there is a section that involves going up and along a grass sea wall, which may be uneven underfoot. Most other event activities will take place on mown grass areas.
