After Hours Walking Tour & Talk: The Darker Side of 17th-Century Medicine
Step inside Moseley Old Hall after hours for an exclusive walking tour and talk exploring the fascinating & gruesome world of the 17th-century Barber Surgeon. Discover the Hall's history before delving into the darker side of early modern medicine.
Join us for a fascinating after-hours evening exploring the history of Moseley Old Hall through the eyes of a 17th-century Barber Surgeon.
The evening begins with a guided walking tour of the Hall, uncovering the stories of this remarkable house and the people who lived here. You will then take a seat in the atmospheric Dame Alice's Room for an engaging talk on the fascinating - and often gruesome - world of the Barber Surgeon. Discover how they treated everything from toothache to battlefield injuries, and learn about the realities of early modern surgery before the advent of modern anaesthetics.
This special event explores subjects not suitable for our regular daytime talks, making it ideal for those with a curiosity for the darker side of history.
The initial walking tour will last about 50 minutes, followed by a seated talk of around 30-40 minutes.
The tearoom will be open before the talk, from 6:15pm - 6:45pm, where you will be able to purchase drinks; these must be consumed before the tour begins.

- After parking, please head to our reception building on arrival where you will be directed by a member of our team
- On very hot days, the upper floor can get warmer, and on cooler days it can be quite chilly; so please dress appropriately for the weather of the day.
- This event includes discussion of historic medical procedures, including dentistry, battlefield injuries and amputation. It is intended for adults (18+) and is not recommended for the faint-hearted. The tour includes stairs and is not suitable for wheelchair users or visitors unable to walk or stand without assistance.
- Over 18's only.
