Walking in Bewick's Childhood
Walk in Thomas Bewick's footsteps on a journey from his birthplace at Cherryburn through the landscape of his childhood.
Discover Cherryburn and its surroundings through Thomas Bewick's boyhood eyes. Join us on a guided walk from Bewick's birthplace cottage at Cherryburn through the landscape that inspired him.
Your guide will introduce you to the birthplace of famous artist, naturalist and engraver Thomas Bewick before taking you on a journey through the landscape of his childhood. You'll find out more about the history, archaeology and natural environment of the area and hear some stories of what a mischievous young Thomas got up to.
On your return to Cherryburn you'll be free to explore the museum, print room, gardens and Bewick's birthplace cottage at your own pace.

Please note:
- Meet at Cherryburn's visitor welcome hut - walk will leave promptly at 1.30pm.
- Please bring evidence of your booking and dress for the weather with sturdy, comfortable footwear. This is an outdoor event with no food and beverage facilities. You may wish to bring a water bottle.
- There is uneven ground during this walk, including over a railway track. Unfortunately, this means that the walk may not be suitable for some wheelchair users. Our group leaders are unable to accompany you, so please note essential companions/carers need to be able to push the wheelchair if required. Please note the return journey is uphill in parts.
- Conditions underfoot vary, from paths, grassed areas, some could be wet and slippy, please come prepared. Terrain also varies from flat to inclines.
- Children go free
- Maximum number in the group is 12.
- The length of the tour may vary slightly. The walk is approximately one mile (1.6km) with frequent stops and starts.
- Toilets are available at Cherryburn.
- The car park at Cherryburn is paid for via the JustPark app. Please enter your National Trust membership number for free parking. Accessible parking available.
- Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome on the walk and in the Cherryburn museum, print room and birthplace.
