Ink Quills and Writing Workshop

Try the heritage craft of ink making using traditional recipes from the Middle Ages, listen to folklore tales, then embark on a writing journey with a local writer to create your own quill-written masterpieces.

Join us for a very special workshop on the Hardwick Estate as we explore the world of traditional ink making and creative writing.

Spend the morning with experienced heritage crafter Jo, who will guide you through the process of making your own oak gall iron ink. Using traditional recipes, you'll be led through a process which originates from the Middle Ages to grind, mix, filter and bottle your own ink to take home. Quills will also be made by storyteller Jim as he also shares traditional tales from ages past.

After a short lunch break, you'll then join local poet Emma who will guide you through a series of short, accessible writing tasks inspired by the textured history of Hardwick Hall to help you create your own pieces of writing.

Finally, you'll use your ink and quills to write your poems, and create your very own bespoke pieces of historically inspired artwork to take home. No previous experienced required, just bring along your creativity and your curiosity!
