Stonemasonry Talks and Demonstrations
Discover the fascinating history of stonemasonry, meet a working craftsman and explore the traditional tools and techniques behind this historic craft.
Join us at Ickworth as part of Heritage Open Days to discover the craft and history of stonemasonry, from traditional guilds to the life and the role of the journeyman.
Throughout the day, explore traditional stonemason’s tools, see pieces of stone at different stages of completion and watch demonstrations of hand-carving techniques. Discover how techniques like these were used to create the stonework and friezes around the Ickworth Rotunda.
At 1pm on Friday 11th, Saturday 12th and Monday 14th, learn more about the world of the stonemason, including the traditional training, skills and experiences involved in learning the craft.
The demonstrations and displays will be available from 10am-12.30pm and 14.00pm-15.30pm, with no booking required. The expert talk takes place at 13.00pm and booking is advised.

Please note:
- The demonstrations, displays and expert talk, will be held in front of the Rotunda and West Wing.
- This event is held outdoors, so please wear appropriate clothing and footwear.
- A shuttle bus is available to take you from the welcome point to the front of the West Wing. Wheels chairs are available from the Welcome point to hire, as well as mobility vehicles.
- Children are welcome, and should be supervised at all times.
