Metal Embroidery Workshops
A series of three workshops to learn about the creative possibilities of metal thread embroidery, often called goldwork, with experienced C&G tutor and member of the Textile Study Group and Embroiderers’ Guild, Mary Sleigh.
(PLEASE NOTE these workshops are three-session courses and you must attend all three sessions either for the Thursday beginner sessions or Wednesday advanced sessions.)
A series of three workshops to learn about the creative possibilities of metal thread embroidery, often called goldwork, with experienced C&G tutor and member of the Textile Study Group and Embroiderers’ Guild, Mary Sleigh.
The workshops offer a contemporary approach to a traditional hand embroidery technique that creates rich textures and a glittering, luxurious appearance.
Students will learn through sampling and experimenting with a variety of threads and methods to create surface designs and embellishment.
Thursday workshops are suitable for beginners and those with some basic goldwork experience.
The workshops will include:
• Introduction to the materials and threads
• Preparation of the embroidery hoop and design
• Embroidery techniques used in metal thread embroidery
• Samples of couching, pearl purl, padded gold kid
Wednesday workshops are suitable for those with some previous experience wishing to extend their skills.
Having mastered some basic skills, students would be able to embark on more creative techniques with a more contemporary approach.
Wednesday sessions take place on 30 September, 14 October and 4 November. Thursday sessions are on 8 and 22 October and 12 November. You should just book for the first session but must attend all three on your chosen weekday.

Please note:
- These sessions will take place in the Wylbore Room on the first floor of Grantham House.
- Fabrics and threads will be supplied.
Students attending should bring:
• sharp embroidery scissors
• needles
• 8” embroidery hoop (wrapped with tape if possible)
• notebook and pencil - This event will be taking place in the Wyldbore Room which is located on the first floor. Unfortunately this can only be accessed via stairs.
