Deep Time Walk
Discover the history of the earth through a guided 4.6km walk.
What is a Deep Time Walk?
A Deep Time Walk is an immersive 4.6 km journey through the whole history of the Earth. Each step taken represents roughly one million years of Earth’s history. As we walk, we’ll travel through the formation of our planet, the evolution of life, major changes in climate and landscapes and mass extinctions. It’s a fascinating way of getting your head around just how old our planet is, and how closely our own story is connected to the natural world around us.
It’s not a walk where we’ll be rushing to get from A to B either. The idea is to take our time, stop along the way, talk, reflect and share thoughts.
Although the walk is only 4.6 km, we’ll be taking it slowly and allowing plenty of time for discussion and reflection, so expect to be out for around four hours. The route does include some uneven ground and a number of stiles. There is also likely to be some mud if we have seen a lot of rain.
What do I need to bring?
Come prepared for being outside for a few hours – suitable footwear, weather-appropriate clothing, water and something to eat. And perhaps bring a bit of curiosity.

Please note:
- Please meet at Cerne Abbas Brewery. https://www.cerneabbasbrewery.com/
- Ensure you bring/wear weather appropriate clothing. There are a number of stops so you may like to bring a portable stool or mat to sit on. Bring lunch, snacks and a drink.
- This is a fully outdoor walk across areas of landscape that are managed by different landowners. The ground can be uneven in places and there are 3 stiles to climb.
- From an age perspective we don't recommend the walk for people under the age of 13 but please get in touch with us if you want to discuss this. There are toilet facilities at the Brewery but no other facilities as we walk.
- Suitable for ages 13 and above.
- We will park at the Cerne Abbas Brewery and begin our walk from this point. The walk is circular and we will end back at the brewery where we will take around 30 minutes to reflect and discuss the walk. The Brewery will provide us with some hot drinks and cake or a pint of their delicious beer if you prefer. This will be included in the price. Please let us know at the time of booking what you would prefer and if you have any allergies.
